Valentine's Day will carry great significance for 3,143 passengers who've been contending with rooms that "smell like outhouses" for four-days aboard Carnival's Triumph cruise ship.
The disabled ship entered Mobile Bay about 4 p.m. Central time. Three tugboats are towing the Triumph, but a broken towline has delayed the ships arrival to between 8 & 11pm Thursday night.
Passengers and 1,086-person crew will have the option of boarding buses to Galveston or Houston, Texas. They can also spend the night in New Orleans and fly out to Houston tomorrow.
According to reports, conditions on the boat are said to be 'extremely terrible' as the ship finally came within sight of land Thursday morning.
Fox News obtained a text from the wife of Thelbert Lanier who is aboard the beleaguered ship.
"Room smells like an outhouse. Cold water only, toilets haven't work in 3 1/2 days. Happy Valentines Day!!! I love u & wish I was there," she said in the text message, which was viewed by The Associated Press. "It's 4:00 am. Can't sleep...it's cold & I'm starting to get sick."
Renee Shanar was on board with her husband. In a text message to AP, she said Carnival told the passengers they are delayed again "because of winds."
"We think they don't want media there," she wrote.
Shanar said conditions were "horrible." There was food, but bathrooms weren't flushing. "People have gotten food poisoning. Old people have fallen and hurt themselves," she wrote in a text message.
Carnival Cruise Lines said Wednesday all guests on board will receive a full refund for the cruise, as well as a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for the trip and an additional $500.
