From coast to coast, hospitals are being inundated with patients suffering from the flu. So far more than 2,000 people are in hospital beds suffering from influenza, 18 children have died.
Doctors are still not sure what's behind the early and strong outbreak of the flu that has now spread to more than 40 states.
As of last Thursday, nearly 300 confirmed cases were reported in the state of Michigan, where 3 children have died.
Seven people in Indiana have died of influenza during what is considered 1 of the worst outbreaks in several years.
The CDC says anyone who has not yet received a flu shot, should get one. "While we can't say for certain how severe this season will be, we can say that a lot of people are getting sick with influenza, and we are getting reports of severe illness and hospitalizations," said Dr. Joe Bresee, chief of the Epidemiology and Prevention branch.
According to the CDC, it is likely the increased flu activity will continue for a while.
