Many gun-related business owners who had partnered with Groupon are expressing outrage over the abrupt cancellation of their deals.
Daily Finance is reporting that Central Texas Gun Works was one of the gun businesses to have its Groupon shut down.
The deal for a discounted concealed handgun training course at the Austin-based business was reportedly a success before Groupon marked it as "no longer available" on Friday morning.
Owner Mike Cargill told the news site that, "[My Groupon representative] said the CEO of the company decided that he's not going to do any more gun-related deals," Cargill said. "I'm asking everyone in the Second Amendment community to boycott Groupon, because the message they're sending is, 'Look, we do not want to support law-abiding citizens taking time out of their schedule to learn the safety surrounding firearms.'"
Groupon spokeswoman Julie Mossler on Tuesday told USA TODAY that the company's decision is based on the deals' performance as well as "current customer and merchant feedback."
Gun control proponents are applauding the decision. "We, along with other groups, had been applying pressure to Groupon for some time now because we were disturbed by the flippant nature of previous gun deals," Ladd Everritt, director of communications at The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, told the Huffington Post. |
