House Speaker John Boehner on Friday said there was no progress to report in negotiations to avert the so-called fiscal cliff.
Boehner, who four days ago offered a counter-proposal to the president's plan that included $1.6 trillion in tax hikes, has only spoken with the president over the phone on Wednesday.
"Since then, there's been no counteroffer from the White House," Boehner said. "Instead, reports indicate that the president has adopted a deliberate strategy to slow-walk our economy right to the edge of the fiscal cliff."
Boehner took exception with White House aides who've said the president is will to go off the cliff, calling their comments "reckless talk."
Boehner who has put higher revenues on the table is finding it hard to negotiate with the president, who Boehner believes has taken a hardline on his demands for higher taxes on those making more than $250,000 a year.
"There are a lot of things that are possible to put the revenue that the president seeks on the table. But none of it's going to be possible if the president insists on his position - insists on 'my way or the highway,'" Boehner said when asked whether he might be able to accept a compromise top rate of 37 percent. "That's not the way to get to an agreement."
