While trying to remain engaged in the fiscal cliff negotiations, President Obama on Friday nominated Sen. John Kerry as his next Secretary of State.
Obama described Kerry as the "perfect choice" to replace outgoing Sec. of State Clinton. Obama's final choice comes after U.S. Ambassador to the UN, believed to be his first choice, ended her bid for the job as a result of her becoming the face and voice of what many believe is the administration's cover-up regarding the Benghazi terrorist attack that result in the death of four U.S. citizens.
In making his decision on Kerry, President Obama highlighted the Senator's years of service in the upper chamber and his chairmanship of the Foreign Relations Committee.
"In a sense, John's entire life has prepared him for this role. ... John's played a central role in every major foreign policy debate for nearly 30 years," the president said. "Few individuals know as many presidents or prime ministers or grasp our foreign policies as firmly as John Kerry."
The president's nomination of Kerry marks the first of many members of his cabinet expected to step down leading up to the Obama's second term in office. |
