The debate over tighter gun regulation is reaching new heights following the shootings that killed 20 children and six adults in Newtown, Connecticut last month.
One Connecticut state lawmaker is attempting to make public the names and addresses of 170,000 handgun permit holders in the state.
The measure introduced by Rep. Stephen Dargan is the latest effort to clamp down on guns in Connecticut in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. If passed, the bill would reverse a 20-year decision by state lawmakers to keep the personal information confidential.
Wasting no time after the swearing in of the 113th U.S. Congress, Democratic Reps. Carolyn McCarthy of New York and Diana DeGette of Colorado refiled a bill that would ban high-capacity ammunition magazines.
"These devices are used to kill as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time possible, and we owe it to innocent Americans everywhere to keep them out of the hands of dangerous people," McCarthy said. "We don't even allow hunters to use them - something's deeply wrong if we're protecting game more than we're protecting innocent human beings." In addition to the bill that would ban the high-capacity magazines, McCarthy and DeGette also introduced a bill that would ban the online sale of ammunition.
The Obama administration, which was virtually mute on the issue until last month, is expected to issue a plan of its own by mid-January. President Obama asked Vice President Biden, who helped pass the 1994 assault weapons ban while a senator, to lead the administration's effort to send proposals to Congress.
The National Rifle Association, which has successfully fought off many attempts to increase gun regulation over the years, expects gun control advocates to come "full force" at the NRA.
But Chicago's status being the murder capitol of the nation, while having some of the strictest gun laws in the country, there seems to be no obvious answer to solving the gun debate.
